The Graduate Materials Council acts as advocates for DMSE graduate students. Members of the GMC serve on the Graduate Student Council, the institute-wide graduate committee and three student representatives serve on the Departmental Committee on Graduate Studies, the group responsible for decisions regarding the curriculum and qualifying procedures. The group also plans many social activities for the students in the department, as well as field teams for intramural sports.

GMC is recognized by the Association of Student Acitivities (ASA) at MIT since November 2012. The most recent version of our by-laws can be found  here.

GMC Diversity Statement
The Graduate Materials Council deeply values diversity, but not just for its impact on our collective strength and improving the overall community. First and foremost, we value and cherish individuals and their rights: to education, to feel safe in MIT and DMSE, and to a community that accepts and values them. We embrace differences in race, ethnicity, ability, gender, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, and skin color, among other attributes with which students identify.

We are committed to protecting and nurturing all graduate students’ mental and physical health and well-being within our capacity, and we are furthermore dedicated to leading initiatives in expanding our capability to do so. We recognize and are actively committed to educating ourselves about the systemic barriers and pervasive biases that afflict students of diverse backgrounds, particularly those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), as well as womxn and gender minorities. We actively strive to host events with a lens which fosters an inclusive community for everyone in our Department.
